INFORMATION

Since the introduction of personalized number plates in Australia in 1969, they have become available in all states as well as New Zealand.

They have now become a great investment, many being used for business names, personal names, vehicle type, birthdays, or just something cheeky.

Whatever the reason, they offer such a vast number of colours and styles, and give us the opportunity to add style or a personal touch to our vehicles. Whatever type of plate you may decide to buy, it can be a great investment, if you are prepared to be patient.

The second plate issued in the state of New South Wales, 'NSW 2' recently sold for $683,200 (the hammer price was $610,000 + 12%) setting a new Australian record.

HISTORY

FACT - The first Australian plate was a home made piece of flat steel, painted black with a single number '1' centrally located. It was a SA plate, the state designation stacked vertically down the left side of the plate, although not required by law until March 31st 1930.

The plate was issued to a Dr William A Hargreaves of Adelaide SA, to his one cylinder Beeston-Humber on September 10th 1906.
In 1908 Dr Hargreaves bought a De Dion Bouton and transferred the number 1 plates to it. He eventually transferred it to his 1926 Chevrolet, where it stayed until he retired from driving in 1955.
